Organized Defence Day Ceremony 2017
In continuation of celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Pakistan and to commemorate the 6th September 1965, a Defence Day ceremony was organized at the Steigenberger Hotel, Berlin. The event was attended by senior Foreign Office officials, Ambassadors, Defence Attaches, Intelligentsia, Opinion-makers, University students, and representatives of media. The event started with playing of the national anthems of Pakistan and Germany. The Defence Attaché in his welcoming remarks recounted some of the brave moments of war depicting great sacrifices of Pakistani soldiers, sailors and airmen alike. A documentary on history of relations between two South Asian nuclear neighbours (Pakistan and India) and the events in Afghanistan following the Russian invasion was also screened. Ambassador Jauhar Saleem, in his remarks on the occasion, said that Jammu and Kashmir dispute was the main reasons for strained Pak-India relations and insecurity in South Asia. Ambassador also elaborated upon the history of terrorism in South Asia noting that it was the US and its allies which introduced “Mujahideens” in the South Asian region. Once the main goal of defeating the USSR was achieved, all these private militias were instantly abandoned leaving Afghanistan and Pakistan to bear the brunt of civil war and terrorism. These were the same groups now engaged in militancy and terrorism. He also mentioned the success story of Pakistan Army; operations Zarb-e-Azb and Rudd-ul-Fasad and stressed that Pakistan had shown the world that terrorism can be defeated. The Ambassador also touched upon the viable solutions presented by Pakistan to root out the menace of terrorism from the region through enhancing mutual trust and cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan. A sampling of Pakistan cuisine was also presented to the guests to much delight.
